Using Stones, Minerals, and Metals for a Charmed Life

I came across this great article and thought I would share!

African shamans, warriors, hunters, and healers all employ the power of ashe to accomplish the task at hand. There is a venerable history that is not very prominent in general literature about the deft skill with which these specialized members of the community combine sticks, stones, roots, bones, and minerals to capture and direct power.

The names of these skilled professionals vary from culture to culture. The goal is to capitalize off the synergy generated from bringing together disparate parts together to create a single more powerful unit. The parts are usually organic, but minerals, stones, and metals are also combined with herbs, roots, and flowers to heal, protect, assure success, and attract prosperity. This article is an excerpt from my book, Sticks, Stones, Roots and Bones: Hoodoo Rootwork for a New Age. This article focuses on ways to harness the powers of the universe inherent in stone, metal, and minerals called ashe. My approach is historical and folkloric with practical applications. Remedies are treated as folklore and should never replace professional help. Since magic is drawn from within, I can give no guarantee concerning the efficacy of rituals or recipes presented. The missing ingredients are your personal powers, focus, and intent.

Minerals and stones play a very active role in African and African American healing traditions. In Daryl Cumber Dance’s comprehensive book From My People: 400 Years of African American Folklore, she shares collected folklore stating that, to identify a Hoodoo or Conjurer, see if the person is carrying a beauty pebble (quartz crystal).

Stones seem to be inert, yet they are actually reservoirs of history, karma, and energy. Each type of stone has its own frequency and unique ability to aid the conjurer. First, though, the rock needs to be charged. There are several ways of charging a rock; most employ the elements:
  • Bury rock and dig up, until the stone feels more powerful and clear
  • Place stone under the sun from three days to one week
  • Soak stone in saltwater, rainwater, lightning water, or sweet water

Hoodoo’s assessment of the powers of particular stones is assigned by the color of the stone and the magical correspondence of the color. In this regard, Conjurers, Witches, and Wiccans share common ground when working stone or metal magic. So called "Voodoo Queen" Marie Laveau and her daughter Phoebie were the first prominent African American seers to employ the European-based tradition of lunar correspondences in their Hoodoo mojos.

Stones and their Magical Intent
  • Green stones are believed to draw prosperity and, in some cases, health. These include peridots, jade, turquoise, malachite, and aventurine. Emeralds make a wonderful wedding stone.
  • Yellow stones—citrine, amber, gold topaz (though a resin not a stone)—are thought to be uplifting, enlightening, empowering, energizing, and attractors because they are symbolic of the sun
  • Pink stones—rose quartz, tourmaline, and rhondochrosite—are stones of the heart, friendship, and attraction
  • Red stones—carnelian, ruby, garnet—are symbolic of life blood; they are cleansers, used for healing, birthing, protection, sexuality, and vitality
  • Brown stones—smoky topaz, certain jaspers, tiger eye—are powerful possessors of animal spirit and magnetism, useful for grounding and centering
  • Purple stones like amethyst are thought of as spiritual stones, and they are also used to generate peace or provide blessings.
  • Clear stones—crystal or diamonds—are sacred stones capable of protection, healing, blessings, and many other purposes.

Stones with Special Features
  • Sodalite: Improves health, aids sleep, clarifies sight
  • Obsidian: focuses psychic intent, unhex, banishing negative, inner strength
  • Hematite: Creativity, vitality, health; strengthens heart and blood
  • Amethyst: Strength during transformation, weight loss, and overcoming addictions
  • Fluorite: Helps institute "tough love" quality, loving detachment separations; surviving incarceration of a loved one; affects health of bones and teeth
  • Multicolored, striated, and dense stones like onyx, agate, and jasper absorb negativity
  • Fossils are some of the most sacred gifts of the Great Mother. Fossils are bones of sorts—remnants of ancient life. To charge them, hold them in your hands or put them on youraltar. Fossils bring special energy to all of your work. You can also burn incense on top of a fossil.
  • Amber: Amber is not a true rock; it is a resin. With its golden tone and sunny appearance, it is compared to Sun Ra. This resin often has insects trapped inside of it—giving us a brief glimpse at ancient life, frozen in time. Amber is always warm to the touch and is good for warming the sick; thus it enjoys a reach relationship with healers. An amber necklace is an important protective device when doing clearings and healing work.
  • Pebbles and Rocks: You don’t have to run out and spend a lot of money to use stones magically. In Jambalaya, author Luisah Teish reports having a collection of simple stones collected from around the world, that she keeps on her altar in a basket. Malidoma Patrice Some, author of The Healing Wisdom of Africa (Tarcher/Putnam NY), devotes a whole chapter to rocks and minerals. He is a member of the Dagara tribe, and he reports that he and his people believe that rocks and minerals are reservoirs of memory. Some recommends holding utilizing simple rocks and pebbles during memory or remembrance healing rituals.

Metallurgy for Conjur Craft
  • Brass is widely used in Africa. The magical qualities of brass are similar to gold, without the implied vanity. Brass is a good metal for candleholders, for incorporation into the altar, and for love draw.
  • Copper is a healing metal and a conduit of both spiritual and sexual energy. Copper is also associated with goddesses: Ishtar, Astarte, Inanna, and Isis. Copper coordinates well with quartz crystals. Copper-colored pennies are tossed in the home by Hoodoos as a charm for luck, salute to the ancestors, to draw luck and money. Trinidadians and other Black folk from the Caribbean and parts of South America are especially fond of copper bracelets and anklets as tools for healing bones. Copper is known to detoxify, stabilize, and deal with blood flow.
  • Iron represents Ogun the warrior deity. Black folks in America have been cooking soul food in cast iron skillets for hundreds of years. Since iron is connected to Ogun, it carries some of protection into our food. Nails, rust, and metal filings are some ways that iron is used to conjure. Metalsmithing was an honorable traditional craft for Early African Americans. We continue to revere it and tap its magic.
  • Lead Lead is used for its ability to hold and deliver intent. Lead pencils used to write in specific written jobs and tricks on brown paper (Kraft paper).
  • Quicksilver was widely used for luck spells, but since it is actually mercury, it is extremely toxic. It is best to leave quicksilver to the hoodoo history books.
  • Silver, to the African mind, represents the sea, great mothers of the moon. It is helpful for intuitive work, dream quest, fertility, and love tricks. Songhai wise men believe that the third finger of the left hand is our conduit of spirit power; therefore, a silver ring placed there enhances spirituality.

Hoodoo Horseshoe Folklore
The transformative aspect of metalsmithing and its ephemera led to a wealth of traditions within Hoodoo. Two of the objects steeped in the lore of metal smith are horseshoes and nails. The elaborate etiquette for the acquisition and magical use of horseshoes in hoodoo include:
  • For a horseshoe to be lucky, the finder must pick it up and carry it with the prongs upwards
  • It should also be hung with the U-shape at the bottom, prongs at the top
  • Hanging the horseshoe properly allows it to become a vessel that holds luck
  • Traditionally, horseshoes are hung outdoors on the property, a fence, or trees
When the horse was a primary form of transportation, you could walk around and find horseshoes. Horseshoes with the nails still intact were thought to be especially lucky.

Some practitioners would work with the nails themselves to draw good fortune, but for the most part it was considered unlucky to remove the nails.

Nails were also important binders both in a practical since (carpentry) and in a metaphysical one. It was believed that you could drive nails into someone’s tracks at the heel to make them stay close to you. To keep a lover close by, his/her shoes were buried under the front step or porch and a simple pine plank was nailed on top to keep the lover at home. In short, nails are a binding tool that can lock your intentions. The ability of nails results from the magical way in which they were created.

Salt and Other Minerals
All life comes from the sea. We begin our lives as human fetuses submerged in amniotic fluid. The deities, orishas, gods, and goddesses of Ancient Lore vividly live out the importance of the sea.

According to Professor John Anenechukwa Umeh, author of After God is Dibla-Igbo Ceremony, Divination and Sacred Science (Karnak House, London England, 1999), salt is the solidified tears of God. God was so saddened by the spiritual and physical pollution that populates the earth that his worry and tears formed the great oceans and seas. Because salt is derived from the emotion of God, a combination of water and salt are used by Dibla (Igbo Wisemen/Healers) to clear all forms of negativity—even hatred.

From a feminine perspective, goddesses of many cultures play a key role in our conception of salt as being sacred; this may be because of the mystical quality of our formation within amniotic fluid. For example, the Water Jar is a symbol of Nut. Nut is of the sky—sun, moon, and stars. She is also mother to the gods. Her essence pours down rain from the heaven, thus assuring our fruitful harvest. She is the milk-giving cow goddess; goddess of the serpents of the primeval waters; fertile pig goddess; bird goddess and goddess of the underworld. Isis is the Great Mother Goddess of Ancient Egypt—the universe and humanities spring from her womb, nourished by her amniotic fluids.

Yemoya and Ologun are the great mothers of the Yoruban Ifa cosmology. The duo is considered compassionate and judicious—givers and takers of life. The two sea mothers represent the generosity of the universe.

Astarte of Mesopotamia is the light; guardian of ships; prayer goddess of the sea, moon, morning and evening stars. She is the cosmic womb and goddess of fertility. Venus is Aphrodite and Astarte’s Roman counterpart. Her image has been condensed into the goddess of love, but essentially she is a great goddess of the sea--with all of the ramifications of the sea, including fertility, love, nurturing, cosmic womb, and the great mother.

Stones are plentiful, beautiful, and have a long history. The magical qualities of stones, minerals, and metals can be used alone or in combination with the elements to increase their ashe and efficacy.

Guerrilla Gardening!!! Coolest Ever!!

Ok, so I was on Etsy and was writing my orders and all that down and started looking around in the plants and edibles section... I found the coolest thing!!! SEED BOMBS!!! Ok, maybe you are already in the loop, but I had never seen them before. Wow, where have I been?
Ok, seed bombs are like balls or disks, that are packed with seeds, like wildflowers and such with compost and a planting medium that are added with water and formed into balls and thrown to give areas a burst of color. These would be awesome in urban areas! How f'in cool would that be?
Theres some sellers that have veggies, flowers and something else, I cant remember cuz I was just so excited to see such a cool thing.

This would be a super cool thing to make with the kiddies. They loved playing in the dirt with mommie when we had a big garden. they would LOVE this! Just think about how many places you walk by or drive by in your day that could use a burst of new life, some color! People get inspired when they see things that may not belong in a vacant rundown lot, but look at those beautiful wild flowers! How cool?

I must admit that for a second the movie, A Color Purple popped in my head when I thought about this. Especially when your watching the movie, yes they were farming and all, and there are lots of shots and scenes in the movie where there was land with dirt roads and sparatic grass here and there. Then you get the most beautiful scene where Miss Ceilie and Shug are walking among beautiful purple wild flowers and just soaking up their beauty. Its a stunning image really when you think about it.

I dont know about you, but when Im on the highway and on a long ride, the one thing that always makes my head turn is a patch for wild flowers or tiger lilies in all their wonderful glory. Life is so much better when theres some beauty in your world. Sow some seeds, make someone else's day when they walk or drive by . Think about it.

A Simple Prosperity Prayer For Today

This isn't just any prosperity prayer for millions of dollars or for new Jordans and junk. This is normally a hard time of year for many people, many worrying about money, family, bills, the list can go on and on. Im adding this because sometimes my may feel 'poor of spirit' so to say. My aim is to enrich your spirit and to remind you where the real riches in life come from.

Burn your favorite incense, Thursday is usually the best day for abundance petitions or prayers.

I am rich with the gifts of the Earth, stability and longevity.
I am blessed by the presents of Air, inspiration and communication.
I am wealthy wit the offerings of Fire, the spark of passion and spirit.
I am filled with the gifts of Water, creativity and emotion.
I am rich beyond my dreams, wealthy and fabulously taken care of.
I am loved and cherished, good enough as I am.
The Goddess loves me and will provide for me.
All is well in my world.

Feeling A Little Despondent....

I have had an excellent run on Etsy, Ive met some pretty cool people. I love that there is a place for me to sell the things that mean something to me and to my buyers. That I cant tell  you makes me feel great.

Now that being said, I have had my share of problems with some buyers, with shipping, etc. For most of this year I have had the most terrible time with one woman, who since March of 2011, until this writing, December 2011, has made my life hell. She has been harassing me when I  had gone out of my way to re-send her items to Hong Kong 4 times. this is all coming out of my stash of products and the shipping costs coming out of my pockets each time.

I contacted Etsy 3 times since the last time I sent her items about her calling me a thief of all things. Etsy told me not to respond to her convos, to ignore her, that I had already done everything that I was supposed to do. Then I get an email at the end of November saying that my shop will be suspended until the matter is resolved. "Resolved" means giving her a total refund. Which I think is ridiculous since I never had any of the packages that I sent her returned to me in the mail. So now, Im sitting here with the biggest selling season upon me, and my shop is closed. Yes, Im mad. Beyond mad really. I try my best to make sure all of my customers are happy. I did exactly what Etsy told me to do, and now, my shop is closed. grrrr...

So, Im not going to just sit here, so I am in the process of opening another store on Zibbit. I will submit the link once I have a few items up. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise. Maybe I will be able to reach new customers and meet new sellers in the Zibbet community. Who knows....

Giving Back

There have been a few times in my life where my family hasnt had a roof over they're heads. Because we existed on the help and generosity of others, I make sure that my children know what it is to truly give back to the community. We donate all of our gently worn clothes to shelters, we donate to canned food drives and we try to volunteer our time.

Last night we volunteered at a great place, The Downtown Rescue Mission. We and hundreds of others helped to top last years number of feeding 600 families. This year they were able to feed almost 900. I think it's important for the kids to see whats going on and to try to help. They left with a great feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment last night. They knew that with each box they carried, that was one family that was going to have a Thanksgiving meal.

On another note, the news was there last night. I tried my best to not be caught by the cameras because I wasnt feeling well (I have several health problems), but I was not going to miss this opportunity to help those that may be in a position that I may have been in a few times of my life. I believe life is a circle, yes, the old what comes around, goes around. I was able to dodge the cameras last night, but one of my twins was caught by them. And the picture the picture that they used on the news channels website was a picture of her helping to keep the line going by filling up her box full of canned goods.
(This is one of my twins, Nyambi.)

We have also donated our time on Thanksgiving to help feed the homeless. This will be the first time that the kids have ever gone this. I went for the first time when I was they're age. It kinda makes you take a step back. Not to look at all of the material things that you have a masted, but with a few changed circumstances, you could easily be in the same boat. I know many people who live paycheck to paycheck. That may be, but I am wealthy in so many other things. Love, friends, family.

In sharing this, I guess what Im saying is this is how we try to touch lives. It really doesnt take much time out of your day. One small dead can impact a life. Give Back.

Not Everything Should Be A Facebook Status!!!

let me say it again in case you didnt read the title. NOT EVERYTHING SHOULD BE A FACEBOOK STATUS!!!

A couple of days ago a woman was shot in the head by her boyfriend, in front of her 11 year old daughter and his 4 year old son. He in turn, shot himself in the head. Neither of them died immediately. The 11 year old had to run from the house to a neighbor and they called 911.

The young lady was my girlfriend's best friend. They have spent they're whole life together growing up. She was past devastated when she found out what happened. How did she find out? A FACEBOOK STATUS! Like come on people! Yup, the young lady's father posted it. They all lived in a small community where everyone knows everyone. This spread like wildfire.

I understand maybe not having certain people's phone numbers and all, but a FB status?
Her passing has the whole community broken. He later passed as well after organ harvesting. As of right now, the 11 year old is now with her father after being in DHR's care for two days, Im not sure where or who the younger child is with.

As of right now the visitation is tomorrow and the funeral for the young lady. My girlfriend is so pitiful. I wish I had the words to comfort her. She is so upset, so sad... she does have great and wonderful stories and memories to hang on to, thank the gods.

In closing, I just dont feel like devastating info  such as this is meant to be a status. I just dont.

New Listings for 10/14/11

Egyptian Kyphi/Kapet Incense

There are many recipes for Kyphi because of translations, and I have bought and tried many Kyphi Incenses, but I believe I hit the nail on the head with this one. Not to say that my way is the only way, but I am beyond proud of it.

Originally I made this for a customer. It was definitely a labor of love. There was more than enough for them, me and enough that I can share it with you!

Ok, here;s some history on Kyphi. This incense played an important role as a sacred fragrance in many Egyptian ceremonies. It was said that this was the Egyptians favorite incense. It was a celebration to the senses. Kyphi was later used as a medicine by the Greeks
Kyphi produces a beautful full-bodied, rich multi-layered bouquet with a warm, relaxing, sweet, spicy and sensual aroma. I make lots and lots of incenses and they all have their use and help aid me. But I Burn Kyphi as a pick-me-up. I've begun to burn it every evening. I like to give customers free girts with their order. I have giving this incense to a few people and I have gotten so much praise on this. I love it! Your gonna love it too!

This listing is for 1/2 ounce of Kyphi/Kapet Incense. I have left it in crumbles, so you can form whatever sized pills you wish to burn.

All of my incenses must be burned on charcoal disks.

Oshun/Ochum Oil
Oshun is the Orisha of the "sweet" or fresh waters. She is known for healing the sick, bringing fertility, prosperity and watches over the poor and brings them what they need. Oshun is called "the unseen mother present at every gathering" She is also revered as "Yeye"-great mother of us all.
Oshun is the force of harmony which we see as beauty, feel as love and experience as ecstasy.
Her special day is Thursday. The number associated with her is 5. Her name comes from the Oshun River in Nigeria. Her colors are yellow and green. Vultures and peacocks are sacred to her. She is totally captivated by all that glitters, especially gold. She loves bells, fans, mirrors, scallop shells, and likes to be offered honey (but be sure to taste it before you offer it), cinnamon, oranges and pumpkins She controls all feminine activity. Her symbol is a fan, comb or mirror. She loves yellow flowers.

To call upon Her, the proper greeting is, "Ori Ye Ye O". She is identified with the new crescent Moon and Venus. Her favorite places in the home are in the kitchen and bedrooms

Well now that you know a little more about Oshun, let me tell you about this oil made in her honor. It has a floral undertone and is sweet and spicy. It contains the best honey I could find, I thought it only fitting considering all that Oshun has done for my family.
I use this oil during petitions to her on yellow candles, I also wear this oil. When I wear it, I cant help but feel that she's looking over me and I cant help but feeling a bit sensual!

This will come in the one ounce bottle shown.

This Touched Me...

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary
Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are
also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles
and they can become your blessings.

Too Many Irons in the Fire...

I've been trying to do 50 things too many everyday. I have all the best intentions in the world, but I swear I dont know how I expect to get all of this done. I keep hearing that there's 24 hours in a day, it's what you do with it that matters...but I have a house to run, 3 teenagers, a girlfriend, my sister, 3 online businesses and products that need to be added to all 3, orders that have to be filled and orders for supplies that have to be made.

I know Im stretching myself thin. All the way around. Sometimes I feel like Im spinning in circles on one hand, on the other Im determined to be there for my family and to build my business. I sometimes find myself so tired that I fall to sleep for 4-6 hours at a time when I really only meant to take a 2 hour nap. I know its my body telling me to slow down. Im just gonna have to find a way to maybe have certain days set aside for this and others for that.

I guess I am just venting. Im always so tired and I feel like Im behind when Im not, I just like to be 3 steps ahead. Im only human, right?

All Hallows

All Hallows. All Hallows Eve. Samhain. Halloween. Hallowtide. The Days of the Dead. The Witch's New Year, and many more names. The most wonderfully magickal time of the year. October 31, November 1 & 2 we honor, pray and communicate with those ancestors and friends who have passed on. These days have a much greater meaning than costumes and candy. (Although I do love costumes and candy...) It is believed that the wall between the living and the dead is open, allowing the spirits of the dead (both good and bad) to mingle among the living.

Many light bonfires to help light the way for aid the newly dead to cross over to the Otherworld.  It is still custom to set a place for the dead at the Samhain feast and tell stories of ancestors. This time of the year is a significant time for divination because of the three Spirit Nights.

I always make a big meal, i bake apple pies or muffins, we all take time for meditation, set lights in the windows and i read the cards. The kids still get to dress up and go trick or treating, I wouldn't deny them that. Along the way I like to leave food at the foot of trees for those that dont have  anyone to set a place for them.

All and all its a time for introspection. It being the time of the last harvest, and the land starts to go bare you really cant help but think about death or the end of things, thoughts, habits or relationships. You look forward to new beginnings. Give thanks to the Earth for all that its provided...yeah there's definitely much to think about. Sometimes I cant help but have a heavy feeling this time of year. I try my best to be festive and teach my children the old ways.

On that note I have incense and a few other goodies that I need to be working on so that we will be stocked up. I cant help but tp make, bake and craft this time of year. I dont know what it is, Im just programmed that way I guess.

Many Blessings!

Ok so here goes...

This is my second blog, my last one wasn't backed up and I lost tons and tons of great stuff. No worries, there's nothing wrong with a new start and new beginnings.
Quick introduction Is in order I guess. My name is Megan. I am the proud momma of 3 daughters. I am also a proud pagan. My life has been so much simpler and my eyes are now open to the world now that I have stopped fighting with myself. For years I was trying to be and worship as other thought I should, all the while I knew I had something special that no one wanted to mention. I could do things, I knew things before they happened. I thought I was some kinda freak, especially through the teen years.
Now, I fly many flags. There is just no way to sum it all up in just a few paragraphs. But I know before too long, you will know quite a bit about me, my work, my business, thoughts, recipes all kinds of goodies!
Hang in there, I hope to provide a good read. :)
